 3 days Photobook Workshop, by Volkan Kızıltunç

In this workshop, participants will work on understanding photobooks, which have become an integral phenomenon of the contemporary photography world and each of which has a story that opens to a different world with its own concept, fiction, rule, sequence, design and material selection. Workshop participants will also obtain information on subjects such as concept creation, unlimited possibilities of editing and sequence processes, page design and right material selection, and will produce original photo-zines or photobooks using their own photo archives as a source.

 

The workshop will be held every day between 11:00-19:00 at SKON & Kapı Studio Cihangir , each workshop will last 8 hours per day for a total of 3 days. The workshop program is as follows.

 

Day 1: In the morning, there will be a presentation on photobooks and photozines. In the afternoon, we will continue with the examination of photobook and zine samples. Afterwards, each participant will make a short presentation of their photobook project or the photographs they have and receive comments.

 

Day 2: Each participant must bring a 7x10 cm prints of the photos they submitted digitally. The workshop instructor will work with each participant individually, give feedback on their projects, develop a concept, and use the small prints to sequence and edit the photobook.

 

Day 3: The projects that have been sequenced will be arranged in the indesign program and cover designs, imprint placements and photozine names will be added and pdf export will be taken to get both the inside pages and the cover prints. The prints taken will be sent to the bookbinder and the final cutting process will be done after the photozines are bound with thread stitching.

 

3 Days workshop participation fee is 4000 TL for students, 5000 TL for other participants from Turkey and 150 € for foreign participants. The fee doesn't include the cost of 2 photozines or dummy photobook, sized 13 x 18 cm on Riso paper with an average of 32-48 pages, printed on a single form, with a cover print on 300 gr matt coated paper, covered with foil and stitched by a bookbinder. One photozine will remain in the NOKS Books Library to be included in future photozine exhibitions.

26th of July on friday there will be an opening of a pop up exhibition and presentation of the photobook dummies and photozies to the public at SKON Cihangir. As the workshop is being held in collaboration with NOKS Books, the dummies always have a chance to being published from NOKS Books, Esra ÖzgüroÄŸlu's Jasmine and İsmet Örs's Morbidus books are produced as dummy books in a workshop with Volkan Kızıltunç.

​1. The selected participants are expected to attend the workshop for 3 full days at KAPI Studio Cihangir on 19-21-July 2025, which are the workshop dates.
2. Selected participants will be contacted by SKON.
3. There is no age limit for applying artists.
4. There is no need to know Adobe Indesign to apply. There will be someone in the workshop to help prepare the designs.
5. Participants are not required to bring their own laptops, but it is recommended.
6. Selected and registered participants need to bring photographs, drawings, maps, etc. of the projects in both print-ready, edited high-resolution digital files and small-sized prints of all necessary visual materials to the workshop.
7. Participants are deemed to have accepted that the digital files they send can be used to promote the SKON and NOKS Books with credit given to the artist.

Your application file must contain the following information:


1. Your name, contact information (phone & e-mail), short biography, text describing your project (Please describe your project in detail. Your description should include details such as the general concept of the project and how long you have been working on it.)


2. Between 20-120 photographs or images of your project. (High resolution, 72 dpi, jpeg, long side max 1024 pixels, max 1mb file size)

The language of the workshop will be Turkish & English.


After all applications are evaluated, those selected as workshop participants will be contacted separately.

VOLKAN KIZILTUNÇ​

 

Volkan Kızıltunç is an artist, academic and curator working in between still and moving image and born in Ankara in 1976 and living in Istanbul. After studying archeology in Istanbul University he had studied BA and MFA in the photography department in Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, Istanbul and now having his PHD in the same department where he’a also working as a research assistant. He’s the co-founder of TOZ Artist Run Space which was active between 2015-2017. He's the co-founder and co-director of NOKS Art Space since 2017. He's the founder of NOKS Books Publishing House and now vice director of FUAM, Photograpy Research Center.

 

In 2013 he won ESSL ART AWARD and Vienna Insurence Group Exhibition Prize and in 2015 Akbank Contemporary Artists Prize. In 2019 he's been selected to the ISCP (International Studio & Curatorial Program) artist residency program in New York, United States as the artist from Turkey, supported by SAHA Foundation. Between 2015-2019 he was the coordinator of Istanbul Photobook Festival.In 2022 he had self published his first artist book, Sonder supported by SAHA Foundation.

 

His works are in many private collections among with museum collections like The Israel Museum in Jerusalem and Elgiz Museum in Istanbul. And he’s exhibited in many international institutions like Haifa Museum of Arts, Israel (2022), Elgiz Museum (2023, 2018), Istanbul Modern (2017), Sinop Biennial (2017), State Museum of Oriental Art, Moscow, Russia (2017), Graeter Taipei Biannial, Taiwan (2016), TORUN Museum of Contemporary Art, Poland (2016), MAS Museum, Antwerp, Belgium (2015), Akbank Art Center (2015), TRAFO Center of Contemporary Art, Szczecin, Poland (2015), Detroit Center of Contemporary Photography, USA (2015), Passau Museum of Modern Art, Germany (2014), ESSL Contemporary Art Museum, Vienna, Austria (2013), Teleglion Foundation of Arts, Thessaloniki, Greece (2012) and Kunsthalle Bremerhaven, Germany (2011).
